Obituary Notice- June Deering (updated)

June Deering, 86, of Liberty Street, Fredonia, died Wednesday, October 15th, 2014 at Brooks Memorial Hospital, Dunkirk, following a short illness.  She was born in Uhrichsville, OH on November 18, 1927, the daughter of the late Fred and Ida (Wires) Gamble.  Mrs. Deering was a graduate of Midvale High School, Midvale, OH, Class of 1945 and worked as a Manager for the former Deering’s Dime & Dollar Grocery Store in Laona.  She also at one time worked for the former Dan’s Motor Lines Trucking Co. of Fredonia.  She was an over 50 year member of Fredonia American Legion Auxiliary Unit #59 and was an over 50 year member of Chautauqua Salon #649 Department of New York.  Mrs. Deering was an avid card player, specializing in pinochle & bridge.

Survivors include a sister, Gloria Everett, of New Philadelphia, OH and several nieces & nephews.  Besides her parents she was predeceased by her husband Leonard Deering, whom she married on June 21, 1947 in St. John’s United Church of Christ, Dunkirk and by a nephew Rick Everett.

Friends are welcome to call at the Riles & Woolley Funeral Home, 39 Main Street, Forestville on Saturday, November 1st, from 12-1pm, from where Memorial Services will follow at 1 o’clock with Rev. Thomas Lawton, pastor of St. John’s United Church of Christ, Dunkirk officiating.  Interment will be at the convenience of the family in Sheridan Center Cemetery.

The family suggests memorials may be made either to the Fredonia Fire Department, 80 West Main Street, Fredonia, NY 14063 or to HOSPICE Chautauqua County, Inc., 20 West Fairmount Avenue, Lakewood, NY 14750.  To send condolences go to

    I am so sorry for your loss. I have so many fond memories of June, my godmother, and of Leonard, throughout my life and will treasure them all. She will be dearly missed. My prayers go out to the family.

    So sorry to read of Mrs.Deering’s passing. Enjoyed her and her husband being at the store in Laona..They were so good to the kids and gave donations to the parade many times. Prayers go out to you!!
