Obituary Notice – Martha E. Gens

SHERIDAN:  Martha E. Gens, 96, of Sheridan, passed away Thursday, August 29th, 2024 peacefully at home.  Martha was born in Dunkirk on February 27, 1928, daughter of the late Walter T. and Lucy (Cary) Ehrke.

  She was a graduate of Forestville Central School, Class of 1945.  Martha entered the former WCA Hospital School of Nursing in September 1945 and graduated on September 17, 1948.  She worked as a Registered Nurse at Brooks Memorial Hospital, Dunkirk, for 40 years.  After retirement, she worked for Dr. Nathmal Taxfare for 16 years.

  Martha enjoyed many hobbies including gardening, cooking & baking.  She also sewed and knitted many items which she gave away generously.

  Survivors include twin sons Monte (Jane) Gens, of Sheridan and Martin (Cindy) Gens, of Humble, TX. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, four great grandchildren and two nephews Tom (Heidi) Erhke and Jim (Ruth) Erhke both of Escondido, CA.  Besides her parents she was predeceased by her husband Ronald Gens, whom she married on October 15, 1948 in the Sheridan United Methodist Church, they were married for 51 years when he passed on June 24, 2000, an infant son Curtis Gens, a son John Gens of Meadville, PA, two daughters Sally (Joe) Aranzullo of Hilton, NY, Wendy Gens of Sheridan and a brother John Erhke of CA.

  Services are private and at the convenience of family.

    I was sorry to hear of the passing of Wendy and Martha. They were amazing women who rose to the challenges of their lives. The neighborhood will not be the same without them, but those who knew them will never forget their spirit. May you cherish your fond memories.

    I am with my father Rollin Fancher and he told me a story of how Martha used to come to family parties and play her accordian for everyone. I hope this memory brings some joy to you in your time of sorrow. Prayers for all of you.
