Obituary Notice – Marvin L. Smith

DUNKIRK:  Marvin L. Smith, 99, a resident of Chautauqua Nursing & Rehab, Dunkirk, formerly of St. Columban’s on the Lake and a prominent person in Hanover Center, passed away Friday, August 4th, 2023 at his residence.  He was born in Silver Creek on June 16, 1924, the son of the late Ernest G and Hazel B. (Bradley) Smith.

  Marvin was a graduate of Silver Creek Central School, Class of 1942, graduated from Alfred State College & was a graduate of Reisch School of Auctioneering.  He served in the U.S. Army and the Army Air Force during WW II.

  Marvin was an Auctioneer, owning the former Smith’s Auction Service, Silver Creek, for 23 years and he also owned M&L Smith Realty for 23 years and owned & operated a grape farm in Hanover Center for 61 years.

  He was a member of First United Presbyterian Church, Silver Creek, a charter member of Hanover Hose Co. #1, member & past president of NYS Auctioneers Association and served on the Board for the National Auctioneers Association, was a 75 year member of Silver Lodge #757 F&AM, Silver Creek and was a member of the Northern Chautauqua Wood Carvers.

  Survivors include two sons Gregory A. (Gail Masiker) Smith, of Westfield; and Jeffrey M. Smith, of Pahokee, FL.  Also surviving are two grandchildren Michael (Katherine Bzibziak) Dutcher & Andrew Dutcher, two great grandchildren Jaxson & Emma Dutcher and several nieces & nephews.  Besides his parents he was predeceased by his wife Frances (Kiser) Smith, whom he married May 6, 1950 in New Freedom, PA and who died Nov. 4, 2014.

  A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date, time and place to be announced.  The family suggests memorial donations may be made either to the Hanover Hose Co. #1, % Steve Peters, 11919 Hanover Road, Silver Creek, NY 14136 or First United Presbyterian Church, 35 Park Place, Silver Creek, NY 14136.
