KnieseIInternetObituaryDUNKIRK:  Irene Rita Kniese, 99, a resident of Chautauqua Nursing & Rehab Center, Temple Road, Dunkirk, died Saturday, October 28th, 2017, at her residence, following a short illness.  She was born in Buffalo, on January 18, 1918, the daughter of the late Stanley and Sophia (Swendra) Slawinski and was always proud of her rich Polish heritage.

She is believed to be the lone surviving graduate of Forestville High School, Class of 1936 and was most respected for her love of family.  She was the wife of two term Trustee and two term Mayor of Forestville, Gerard “Bill” Kniese, whom she co-founded & operated the former Forestville Plumbing, Heating & Appliances at 8 Main Street, for over 25 years.

Mrs. Kniese was a lifetime member of Forestville United Methodist Church, a lifetime member of the Order of Eastern Star, Forestville Chapter #247, was an active member of the former Forestville Volunteer Fireman’s Ladies Auxiliary and played a major role in the “Grand Celebration” of the 1958 Village of Forestville Sesqui-Centennial.  The family is especially grateful for the very special attention & loving care she received at the Chautauqua Nursing & Rehab Center and from her longtime roommate Doris Kelly.

Survivors include all three children, Carole Meadows and Ronald Kniese, both of Fredonia; and David Kniese, of Batavia.  Also surviving are Many grand & great grandchildren “so many”, she often said, that they would fill the room and spill out into the hallway.  Besides her parents and husband she was predeceased by a grandson Kevin Gerard Kniese of Batavia, who died of Leukemia in 2006 at the age of 27.

Memorial Services will be held Friday morning, November 10th, at 10 o’clock, from the Forestville United Methodist Church, 3 Park Street, Forestville, with Pastor Grace Warren, officiating.  Interment will follow in the Abbey Cemetery, Forestville, where she will join her late husband who died in 1975.

The family would be most grateful, if memorials were made either to the Forestville United Methodist Church, 3 Park Street, Forestville, NY 14062 or to the Church of one’s choice.  Arrangements are by Riles & Woolley Funeral Home, Forestville.  To post condolences go to

I knew Mrs. Kniese back in the 90s when I worked as a home health aide while attending SUNY Fredonia. She has popped up in my memories through the years. Very nice woman. Rest in peace, Irene.
