Virginia Beach, VA: Robert E. Winterberger, 101, of IC Duncan Home of Guiding Hands, Virginia Beach, VA, formerly of Rt. 39 Forestville, passed away Wednesday, June 28th, 2023 at his residence. He was born in Dunkirk on March 4, 1922, the son of the late Ralph and Ethel (Putnam) Winterberger.
Bib graduated from Greenville High School, Kentucky, Class of 1940 and was a graduate of Purdue University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Agriculture Engineering. He served in the U.S. Navy during WW II, worked as a Supervisor for the former Kraft Foods, Dunkirk, for 30 years, retiring in 1983 and also owned & operated a grape vineyard in Forestville. He also managed a cheese plant in Vermont during his career at Kraft.
Bib was a member of the former St. John Bosco and St Rose of Lima RC Churches, and was a former member of the Forestville Central School Board in 1968. He enjoyed woodworking and doing maintenance work.
Survivors include four daughters, Janet (Ted) Gaylord, of Saranac Lake, NY; Celeste (Linden) Winterberger, of Raleigh, NC; Elyse Brown, of Norfolk, VA; Heidi (John Hefty) Payne, of Santa Rosa Beach, FL; a son, Shawn Winterberger, of Garner, NC; Also surviving are ten grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren, and several nieces & nephews. Besides his parents he was predeceased by his wife Dorothy (O’Connor) Winterberger whom he married on October 11, 1945 in Dunkirk and who died October 7, 2014, two daughters, Maureen Carroll, Michele Winterberger, four brothers, Alois, Benjamin, Harlan, Charles “Lenny” Winterberger and three sisters Laura May Winterberger, Virginia Vandenakker, and Kathryn Richard.
Friends are welcome to call at Riles & Woolley Funeral Home, 39 Main Street, Forestville on Friday evening, August 18th, from 6-8 PM. A Celebration of Life will be held at 10 o’clock Saturday, August 19th from St. Rose of Lima RC Church, Center Street, Forestville, with Rev. Daniel Fiebelkorn officiating. PLEASE MEET AT CHURCH. Interment will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Town of Sheridan. Military Graveside Services will be conducted by members of J. Carter Knapp American Legion Post #953, Forestville.
