FREDONIA: Laura H. Gronquist, 79, formerly of State Street, Jamestown, passed away Thursday, Dec. 1, 2016 surrounded by family in the home of her son in Fredonia, where she resided since 2014. She was born Dec. 8, 1936, in Jamestown, the daughter of the late Lawrence and Ruth Hallstrom of Columbus, Ohio.
She was a graduate of Chillicothe High School in Chillicothe, Ohio, and Ohio State University with a Bachelor’s degree in science education. During her teaching career she taught both biology and chemistry at Hindsdale High School in Hindsdale, N.Y., as well as at Jefferson Middle School and Jamestown High School, in Jamestown, retiring from Jamestown High School in 2000.
She was a member of Christ First United Methodist Church, where she sang in the choir for many years, the Mozart Club, Jamestown Choral Society, PEO, American Association of University Women, and the Jamestown Audubon Society. She enjoyed going to Chautauqua Institution and singing in the choir there as well as raising horses, gardening, identifying trees and flowers, walking her dog, and spending time with family and friends.
Survivors include her children, Sarah Gronquist of Berkeley, CA, and Matthew (Kristen) Gronquist, of Fredonia, five grandchildren: Eric, Emily, and Michelle Gronquist of Fredonia, and Ian & Reuben Gronquist-Charland of Berkeley CA; and one great granddaughter: Pauline Martinez of Fredonia. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her sister Neva Hallstrom and her brother, John Hallstrom.
A Memorial Service will be held Sunday afternoon January 15th, at 2 o’clock, from Christ First United Methodist Church, 663 Lakeview Avenue, Jamestown, with Rev. Natalie Hanson, pastor officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Jamestown Audubon Society, 1600 Riverside Road, Jamestown N.Y. 14701.
