SOUTH DAYTON: August “Gus” L. Szymanski, 91, of Cottage Road, South Dayton, died Sunday, July 31st, 2016 at his son’s residence, Fredonia. He was born in the Town of Dayton, on December 14, 1924, the son of the late Walter and Katherine (Pyza) Szymanski.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953 as a Sgt. during the Korean War and worked for the former Peter Cooper Corporation, Gowanda. Mr. Szymanski was a member of South Dayton American Legion Post #1593 and took great pride in canning many fruits & vegetables (especially pickles) for all of his extended families. He loved hunting deer & trapping.
Survivors include a son, Dennis (Janet) Szymanski, of Fredonia, 2 grandchildren- Amber (Kevin) Powell of Portland and Trevor Szymanski of Fredonia, 3 great grandchildren Hope, Josh & Hannah Powell and several nieces & nephews. Besides his parents he was predeceased by his wife Marjorie I. (Ruckh) Szymanski, whom he married June 24, 1950 in the former St. John Fisher RC Church, South Dayton and who died June 6, 2012, by two sisters Ann Williamson and Bertha Milks and by three brothers Major, Frederick and Chester Szymanski.
There will be no visitation observed. A Private Memorial Service will be held at the convenience of the family. The family suggests memorials may be made to HOSPICE Chautauqua County, Inc., 20 W. Fairmount Avenue, Lakewood, NY 14750.
