Obituary Notice – Norman G. Newton

IRVING: Norman G. Newton, 90, of Irving, passed away in his home surrounded by family on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, following a lengthy illness. He was a native of Silver Creek, born on September 8, 1935, the youngest of ten children of the late Harry and Mabel (Spears) Newton.

  Following graduation from Silver Creek Central School, Norman worked for Bethlehem Steel Corporation and then became a Union Carpenter with the Buffalo Union Carpenters. He worked for several decades for Metzger Construction and Stimm Associates before retiring, earning the nickname “Norman the Foreman” and a reputation as a prodigious worker.

  Norman was an avid Buffalo Bills, Sabres, New York Yankees and Purdue Boilermakers fan. He also enjoyed both listening and dancing to polka music and spinning the slots at local casinos.

  Survivors include three sons; David Newton, Tim (Susan) Newton, Scott (Lisa) Newton, and three beloved grandchildren; Emily, Aaron and Brenna. Besides his parents he was predeceased by his high school sweetheart and wife of 61 years, Shirley (Dickinson) Newton, whom he married on August 3, 1957 in the First United Presbyterian Church, Silver Creek and who died on July 11, 2019, a son Tommy and his nine siblings; Ivy, Dorothy, Edna, Catherine, Gladys, Donald, Alice, Carlton, and Shirley.

  Private graveside services will be held in Evergreen Lawn Cemetery, Town of Hanover.  The family would like to give a special thank you to Chautauqua Hospice & Palliative Care for their caring assistance.
