Valvo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/rilesandwoolleyfuneralhome.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/ValvoM.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-542\" alt=\"ValvoM\" src=\"https:\/\/rilesandwoolleyfuneralhome.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/ValvoM-150x150.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>FORESTVILLE:\u00a0 Michael S. Valvo, 93, of Main Street, Forestville, passed away peacefully, Friday, November 15th 2013, at his residence.\u00a0 He was born in the Village of Forestville, on January 5, 1920, the son of the late Samuel and Sara (Randazzo) Valvo.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Valvo was a graduate of Forestville Central School, Class of 1938 and served in the U.S. Army as a Pfc during WW II. He received the Silver Star medal for his actions on July 10, 1943 when his engineering regiment approached shore at Red Beach, Licata Sicily. \u00a0The men had jumped from the ship wearing their gear, only to find themselves submerged &amp; pulled to near drowning by a strong undertow.\u00a0 Mr. Valvo swam to shore, removed his gear and swam back out to rescue his comrades while being barraged by enemy fire. \u00a0Three men lived as a result of his selfless act.\u00a0 Mr. Valvo also received many other medals including the Purple Heart.\u00a0 He worked as a Postmaster &amp; a Mail Carrier for the Forestville Post Office, retiring in 1979 and also worked as a Custodian &amp; Bus Driver for Forestville Central School.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Mr. Valvo was a current member of Forestville Fire Department, where he had served as President, Chief &amp; Assistant Chief and served as Captain &amp; Lieutenant of the Rescue Squad, was the oldest living EMT in NYS, starting in 1972, was an EMT Instructor &amp; CPR Instructor, a member of the Chautauqua County EMS Council, J. Carter Knapp American Legion Post #953, Forestville, where he served as Past Commander &amp; Financial Officer, a member of Sheridan VFW Memorial Post #6390, Moose Lodge #89, Dunkirk and Hanover Lodge #152 F&amp;AM, Forestville.\u00a0 He was a former member of the Forestville Village Board, a former Forestville Youth Recreation Director, a former member of the Forestville Central School Board twice and serving once as President and in 2008, the Village of Forestville dedicated the 1st week in October as Mike Valvo week, in recognition of his services to the community.<\/p>\n<p>Survivors include two daughters, Carol (Dave) McEntarfer, of Forestville, Vicky Valvo, of Buffalo, a son, Gary (Nancy) Valvo, of Hermosa Beach, CA, two brothers, Louis Valvo, of Maryland and Joseph (Mary) Valvo, of Pennsylvania.\u00a0 Also surviving are 4 grandchildren Terri (North) Rosier, Robert North, Timothy North &amp; Natalie Valvo, 7 great grandchildren Tyler North, Kayla North, Trey North, Jennica North, Trevor North, Shelby Smith &amp; Lea North, special friend John Potter of Arkwright and several nieces &amp; nephews.\u00a0 Besides his parents he was predeceased by his wife Lucile (Tanner) Valvo, whom he married June 14, 1952 in Forestville and who died May 7, 2011, by 2 brothers Carl &amp; Christy Valvo and by 3 sisters Marian Peters, Nancy Stone &amp; Cecelia Valvo.<\/p>\n<p>Friends are welcome to call at the Riles &amp; Woolley Funeral Home, 39 Main Street, Forestville on Wednesday from 2-4 &amp; 7-9 pm, from where Funeral Services will be held Thursday morning at 11 o&#8217;clock, with Pete Dawson, Fire Service Chaplain, officiating.\u00a0 Interment will follow in Forestville Cemetery.<\/p>\n<p>Graveside Military Services will be conducted by members of J. Carter Knapp American Legion Post #953, Forestville.\u00a0 A Fireman&#8217;s Service will be conducted Wednesday evening at 7 o&#8217;clock in the Funeral Home by members of the Forestville Fire Department.<\/p>\n<p>The family suggests memorial donations may be made to the Forestville Fire Dept.
