CrossDSILVER CREEK:  Diane E. Cross, 75, of Buffalo Street, Silver Creek, passed away Thursday, August 30th, 2018 at home surrounded by loved ones.  She was born in Buffalo, on May 2, 1943, the daughter of the late Frank and Florence (Pyre) Dunshie.

Diane lived a full and active life surrounded by her beloved family and friends she made along the way.  She loved to travel with her husband Ron; they spent many winters in Gulf Shores, Alabama, enjoying the local life and could be found visiting the casinos and Flora-Bama frequently.  Ron and Diane went out every Saturday night to listen to local music and go dancing for their weekly date nights.  They also frequently visited Chautauqua Health & Fitness; She enjoyed the community of people that were in her Silver Sneakers class and spoke fondly of them often.

Diane could usually be found tending to her beautiful garden and it brought her so much joy to see it all come together year after year; she loved to talk about her garden and show off her favorite flowers.  Diane was also a longtime season subscriber to Shea’s Performing Arts Center in Buffalo and always loved to see a good show; she also often traveled to New York City and Toronto to see shows.  Diane spent her working years babysitting and could often be found with a baby on her hip; we feel so lucky that so many people were lucky enough to know and love our Nani.

More than anything, Diane loved her family unconditionally and has created so many beautiful and fun memories, whether it be going on fun-filled trips with her family or going with her grandchildren to a concert or a show.  She was always bragging about her family to anyone with a listening ear and was so proud of all that they have done. She even saved every card she received and every newspaper clipping that included a family member.

Diane has taught us all so much. Highlights include organizing your cans by type and with the label facing out, how to properly space your flowers when planting your garden, teaching us all about the stock market, how to properly balance a checkbook, Fridays are for washing sheets, you should make your bed daily – and don’t forget the hospital corners.  While she taught us so many lessons, we are still working on some, like folding a fitted sheet, making her delicious tuna macaroni salad, or crimping a pie crust properly.  The most important lesson she taught us all was how to love your people deeply and that family is the most important thing and should be treasured.  She made sure we felt loved every day of our lives and we are so lucky to have had her love for all of these years.

Survivors include her loving husband and soulmate Ronald N. Cross of Silver Creek, whom she married January 22, 1966, in Silver Creek, three daughters, Valerie (Phil) Swiatkowski, Melanie (Dale) Austin, Amy (Kern) Mullen, all of Silver Creek;  and a brother, Douglas Dunshie, of Farnham.  Also surviving are five cherished grandchildren Alicia Wroblewski, Emily (Max) DeNisco, Jacob, Kyle & Grace Mullen and three adored great-grandchildren Lillian, Owen and Abigail DeNisco.  At Diane’s request, there will be no services observed.  Instead, her immediate family will be celebrating her life with a fancy dinner out.  The family would like to thank the staff of the following organizations & request that memorials be sent to them, Roswell Park Alliance Foundation, Roswell Park Cancer Institute, PO Box 631, Buffalo, NY 14240-0631, Chautauqua Hospice & Palliative Care, 20 W. Fairmount Avenue, Lakewood, NY 14750 or to Silver Creek Fire Dept. Emergency & Rescue Squad, 162 Central Avenue, Silver Creek, NY 14136.  Arrangements are by Riles & Woolley Funeral Home, Forestville.  To post condolences go to www.rilesandwoolleyfuneralhome.com. To our beautiful, beloved Nani:  We miss you more than words can describe and we love you lots.

My deepest sympathies go out to all of you. I had the pleasure of meeting Dianne when Amy and I became college roommates. I have fond memories of my weekends in Silver Creek. What an amazing woman! What more can be said about her? My heart goes out to Ron, Val, Mel, Amy and the rest of her extended family. Much love and many hugs to you all.

I am so sad to hear of the passing of my cousin Diane. I know from personal experience she was a loving and dedicated niece to our aunt, Bernadine Pire (Aunt B) and my mother Hazel Whitney and kept in contact with them and came to see them even though she lived a couple of hours away and her own mom had passed away a long time ago, In fact the last time I saw her she had come to Olean to attend a birthday party for my mom’s 90th birthday. My sincere condolences to Ron, her daughters and grandchildren. I am so glad you have so many happy memories of her. Liz Whitney Holihan

  4. I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I have fond memories of sitting and talking with Diane when our kids were little and played together. It was always fun. Time goes too quickly, and duties get in the way, but we still waved to say hello from a distance when we would spot each other. I will miss even that….
