Obituary Notice – Alice M. Smathers

SmathersASILVER CREEK:  Alice M. Smathers, 57, of Hickory Street, Silver Creek, passed away Monday, June 25th, 2018 at Buffalo General Hospital, following a lengthy illness.  She was born in Silver Creek, on April 11, 1961, the daughter of the late Robert and Rose (Olmstead) Lyle, Sr.

Her smiling face could be seen everyday at the former Hogg’s Dairy in Silver Creek, where she loved to serve breakfast to the guys.  Mrs. Smathers learned how to use the computer while working at the Seneca Hawk, Irving and she worked as a Cashier for the former Valvo’s Convenient Store Silver Creek, until it’s closing.

Mrs. Smathers was an active member of Christ Chapel Wesleyan Church Silver Creek, a former Firefighter & member of Silver Creek Hose Co. #1 and a longtime member of the Silver Creek Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, where she served as President for many years.  She spent much of her time caring for family & friends, including working as an aide in several homes, cleaning houses, baby-sitting and cooked many meals for the Fire Department and families that needed help.  Mrs. Smathers also took charge and helped cook many breakfasts & dinners at church.

Survivors include her husband David E. Smathers, whom she married April 21, 1979, in the Forestville Wesleyan Church, a daughter, Christy M. Smathers, a daughter-in-law Cheryl A. Brown a sister, Debra (Tony) Ortiz, all of Silver Creek; three brothers, Bruce (Patricia) Olmstead, of Friendship; Robert (Ginger) Lyle, Jr., of Forestville; and Carl Lyle, of Dunkirk.  Also surviving are 3 grandchildren- Aaron & Mcenzie Henhawk and Mea Smathers and many nieces & nephews and a large loving family in Ohio & Pennsylvania.  Besides her parents she was predeceased by 2 sons, David E. Smathers, Jr. and Charlie Smathers.

A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, July 14th at 11 o’clock from Christ Chapel Wesleyan Church, 60 Buffalo Street, Silver Creek, with Rev. Michael Leamon officiating.

The family suggests memorials may be made to Silver Creek Fire Dept. Emergency & Rescue Squad, 162 Central Avenue, Silver Creek, NY 14136.  Arrangements are by Riles & Woolley Funeral Home, Forestville.  To post condolences go to www.rilesandwoolleyfuneralhome.com.
