WatsonDFORESTVILLE:  David A. Watson, 91, of Rt. 39 Forestville, passed away Friday, June 29th, 2018 at Gowanda Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, following a short illness.  He was born in Dunkirk, on February 27, 1927, the son of the late William and Mary (Jones) Watson.  Mr. Watson was a graduate of Dunkirk High School class of 1945.  Mr. Watson received a bachelors degree from the University of Buffalo, where he also received his masters degree in Physical Education in 1964.  He served in the U.S. Army Air Force during WW II.

Mr. Watson was a Physical Education Teacher for Dunkirk Public School, for 26 years.  He formerly owned a Christmas Tree Farm and was the Longest living member of the First Baptist Church, Dunkirk.  Mr. Watson was a member of the J. Carter Knapp American Legion Post #953. Forestville, a member of the New York State Retired Teachers Association, former 20 year member of the Sheridan Fire Department, was President of the Sheridan Memorial Field, Scoutmaster for both Dunkirk Troop #10 and Silver Creek Troop #36 and at one time taught basketball and driver education in both Dunkirk and Silver Creek.  He enjoyed spending winters in Floral City, Florida.

Survivors include his wife Elaine (Roof) Watson, of Forestville, whom he married on November 24, 1951, in Silver Creek, three sons David (Mary Ellen) Watson, of Silver Creek; Robert Watson, of Fredonia; and James (Linda Gonzalez) Watson, of Cassadaga. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren and several nieces & nephews.  Besides his parents he was predeceased by a grandson Scott Watson, 2 brothers James R. & William Watson, a sister Beatrice Day and his best friend Dick Walker.

Friends are welcome to call at Riles & Woolley Funeral Home, 39 Main Street, Forestville on Monday evening from 7-9 PM, from where Funeral Services will be held Tuesday morning at 11 o’clock, with Pastor Mark Massaro, of the First Baptist Church, Dunkirk, officiating.  Interment will follow in Sheridan Center Cemetery, Town of Sheridan.  Military Graveside Services will be conducted by membes of J. Carter Knapp American Legion Post #953, Forestville.

    I recently found a letter written to David’s brother, James R. Watson, from their sister Beatrice Day. The letter was written in September 1944, just days after the family received a telegram notifying them that James was missing in action.
